Ok, back to our buck a day.  I love this buck.  He was all rutted up and hurt his eye.  I shot him a few years ago.  The landowner said he never saw the buck again and presumed he died.

Yeah, it was mid day and bad light.  He was staring at a harem of does he was protecting.  A nice buck.

They aren't all big ones.  I like this photo for the detail.  If you look close you can see the setting sun in his eye as well as the sky and a tree.

Time for another.  I took this almost 20 years ago with a bad old film camera.  Back then, I always wished for a nice lens like a 400mm and thought if I could just get one, I could take some good photos...

Pope,

That pics looks like a head mount on a wall paper wall. Intresting how that buck is standing behind the bush and looking down.

Cool pics. Wish I had the talent to take pics like that much less finding those quality animals.

Since I can't upload you get another previously released photo.  Personally, it's one of my favorites.  Don't worry, we'll get to a point where I don't have any more that have been released and there will be some fresh stuff.

We should resurrect this old thread.  It's almost muley season as they are about done growing.  I have a velvet trip planned soon so I'll be able to add a lot of new ones.  Everyone pitch in and we'll try and get at least one buck pic posted a day here.

I went out to a local whitetail hotspot.... Yes western Wyoming is crawling with whiteys!    Just after the sun went behind the mtns I found this neat buck.  Some really nice mass and check out the huge double eyeguards!   Looks like he'll end up as a basic 10 point (eastern count) with some trash!

Title: Re: A Buck A Day...
Post by: popeshawnpaul on July 29, 2011, 07:36:47 AM
Nice eyeguards and mass on that.  I always have a hard time telling mass with velvet.  Sometimes I'm surprised they have less or more than I thought.

Nice eyeguards and mass on that.  I always have a hard time telling mass with velvet.  Sometimes I'm surprised they have less or more than I thought.

I know how that goes but in this case I think he's going to have tremedous mass.   With the side angle he almost looks palmated!  But I may be suprised!

This is one of my favorite threads when it gets rolling.  I'm looking forward to the great photos that I'm sure will be posted.

Too bad my pictures look like a small dot that  requires me to use MS Paint to circle in red so you can see the deer.  Probably should get something other than an iPhone.  (Well, alright, I have an older but ok camera and just no good lenses - plus lack any skill or artistic talent, but that's beside the point.)

This is probably the most impressive mule I've ever photographed in the nearly 30 years of serious mule deer photography.  I was able to photography this buck and some and or his offspring for about 10 years.  We called him "Big Louie"  He lived in and around Rocky Mountain National Park.  From the early 80's till about 95 RMNP was the best place in the world to photography big muleys.  Sadly since then it's gone downhill so much I don't even bother going there.  The exploding elk herd coincided with the dramatic reduction in the deer herd.  Haven't seen a decent buck since the goverment shut down in fall of 95.  The park was closed for 5-6 days and the locals had a unscheduled hunt in the park and every big buck I knew of dissapeared.  Back to "Big Lou"....  He spent a lot of time around a private lodge near Estes Park and the owner had most of his sheds..   He would score 260-270" most years.  You wouldn't see him till Nov 1st and he'd show up and stay low till mid-March and then disspear for the summer.. I tried to find him up high but never did or never heard of anyone who had.  He was a huge deer, I'm certain he weighed over 400lbs.   I saw him fight once, a large mature boxy 32" buck I had never seen before came trotting down the hill towards Big Lou and his does early one morning.  Louie took one look at went right at him, no posturing.  They came together and Louie pushed the other buck uphill 30-50 yds with amazing violence.  He ran the rival buck into the base of a large Ponderosa pine and I thought he broke his back.   They broke apart and the rival ran back the way he came and I never saw him again.  Side by side compared to that buck he was easily 1/3 larger.....  I sure miss him he was totally at ease with my presence and I could walk with him for hours.  He's been published hundreds of times.

Amazing buck and image Robert.  Love the story.  A friend of mine shot a nice 180-190 buck there a year or so ago but that's about all I've heard about in a while.  I'm scared to post one tomorrow after that one...

Those last few rays of sun on the face at close distance helps.  I'm finding I love using a polarizer for wildlife in close as it takes the glare out of the eye and shows you what is really there.  It helps when they are bug eyed looking at their doe too.

Well, I just got done revamping my mule deer gallery.  I'd say about 1/2 new images and all were reprocessed.  I cut a lot of rif raf out and older film images sticking with just about the last 3 years.  I just realized I need some more muley images!  I'll have to get some more.  Here is one from last winter that I reprocessed and worked a bit.

Not much of a chance to get on the forums of late...   Here's a real nice Wyoming whitetail from my local hotspot.   Most of the bucks here get busted up real bad so you always have screwed up racks to deal with.  This guy was an exception.  He's chasing a doe which was fortunately walking right towards me.

Dale,
Based on your latest post, and that super-heavy velvet buck you posted a couple weeks ago, I have to say that you have some mighty fine whitetails over in your part of Wyoming.  Perhaps Wyoming is one of those "best kept secret" type of places when it comes to quality whitetails.

Here's another buck for today, taken about a week ago:

Nice Buck.
You got a shot of the other side?
Yep, it shows that he's got 10 scoreable points on the left side.  Obviously, his left was supposed to be like his right, but some injury occurred in the early development of that year's rack, and he got all weird over on the left.  Makes him end up a 5 by 10. Personally, I think he's cooler looking that way!

Nice buck tom.  No shedding yet but I'm guessing this weekend will be the time when many will be and those bloody stripping shots will be possible.  Too bad I got a honey do list...
Well, I did get out last weekend, and found several mature bucks.  Unfortunately, all of 'em had already shed except one.  He was still in full, in-tact velvet.  I know he's gonna shed soon, but have obligations (work), so I couldn't stay with him.  I'm sure by this coming weekend, he will have completely shed.

I found a semi-mature (2 1/2 or 3 1/2 year old) buck shedding, and he even was rubbing his velvet off on a tree trunk.  Problem was, he wanted to be left alone while he rubbed, and would not allow me to approach any closer than about 70 yards.  It was in a thick forest, and no images were possible due to all the brush in the way at that distance.

So, I guess I'll have to make velvet-shedding a high priority next year, as I don't want to miss it again.

Here's a buck for today; a little muley drinking out of a mineral-rich mud puddle.  I like the way the skin at the base of his nose got all bunched up when he drank!

I've never seen him again.  He is in an area where I am forbidden to get off the road.  I saw one much much bigger at a long long distance and couldn't go after him.  A definite 200"+ buck...

In the old days they had photo permits and you could go in the backcountry.  I have an old image around here somewhere with 3 bucks that are all about 200" class with each other.  Those were the days.

I'm going to be there Saturday...  Whisters.

BAD IMAGE ALERT!  Thought you might enjoy it anyhow.  If this one isn't 200" I don't know what is...  Over 30" wide, 10-12 points on the left side, 5-6 plus long eye guards on the right.

It's funny to see the difference between a hunter's perspective and a photographer's perspective.  As both a hunter and a photographer, I am conflicted on this.  Nah, not really - I'll take image quality over antler quality any day!

But I must admit, I keep many of my bad photos of huge bucks, while I delete all of the bad photos of small and average bucks.

I cannot understand the mentality of someone even wanting to shoot a buck like that.  I have always considered hunting to be a wilderness experience, not a backyard experience.
Even more pathetic when it's not even the hunter's backyard, but the backyard of a stranger who has  not even given you permission to hunt.
Geez - go buy a canned high-fence hunt if you get your thrills in such a pathetic way.

Guess y'all can tell I have some rather strong feelings against shooting "tame" animals on private property.

really??? do you know the person that took the buck??? the pics I took of him he was 10 feet from me... when I said I would have shot him I meant that as he was a really nice buck... thats a shame that somebody would go as low as to taking him though...  and probly somebody who know he was there and wouldn't run from you...

This is a really BAD image of a really COOL buck from my recent trip to South TX...    Great double drops on this buck..  I  wanted him bad but never had a chance to photograph him outside of a really thick dark brushy area.  For this crummy shot I was handholding my 500 and having to manual focus since I was shooting right through the brush.  I acutally saw a even bigger buck with 2 drops on one side and one on the other..  Still worth a look I guess?

Looks very oversharpened, though.  I think if you had a copy that was not sharpened, it would look even better.

Most often, images don't have to be sharpened at all if a solid tripod was used.  Especially at the small image sizes we're posting at.

good stuff guys!

Wes, you've got something special with those dark color phases down there.  I hope they continue to pop up year after year.

Rob, I love those Whiteys!  Cool to get the buck & doe in the same frame.

Here's one of my favorite bucks.  Unfortunately, he's presumed dead now.  That's ok - he lived a long, long life and spread his genes around pretty good.  I hope to see his antler characteristics in future generations.

Dennis,
He showed up in the Campground-at first after dark and then in the morning before good light. When the snow hit
he stuck around..I thought he was exceptional.
