It's that time again.  First scouting trip.  Good horn growth, some great bucks spotted.  Not all photogenic.

Deer Hunting / JJ's 2012 Hunting Thread (BBD....Finally!)
« on: September 19, 2012, 06:51:15 PM »
It all begins next Friday.   2 short months, 3 deer tags, 2 elk tags, and 31 planned days in the field.   On December 1st, I will look back and wish I was sitting right here again - starting this thread and dreaming about the critters I will see....

Old pictures that Phool thought he could clean up for me.   Appreciate it!

Who's going this year?  I am planning on heading down and it will be my first trip.  I am going solo, so if someone else was interesting in heading down, I'd be up for a travel partner.

Let me know,

Optics / Swarovision
« on: October 27, 2011, 06:25:47 PM »
Got 'em tonight.  12x50 Swarovsion to replace the 15x56.   I'll probably change out the Zeiss next spring for the EL range and be back to all Swaro.   First hunt for the new Swarovsion will be Shorty's and then off to Colorado for the 3rd season.  Will have some reports after a little field time, although, probably not necessary as everyone knows that these are the poo!!!!!

Still got a little cosmetic work to do, but it is shootable.  It was a 270 wsm, but is now chambered in 7mm/300wsm (26" Krieger barrel) with a custom reamer that allows 168 bergers to be jammed and still fit the mag.   Got the Norma brass prepped and loaded - ready for a little accuracy testing tomorrow.   Got a good deal on a couple 6.5-20 Leupys so I went with that.  Put the other on my Hart-barreled .243.  Will have to play with that one after hunting season - my new yote getter.

Deer Hunting / JJ's 2011 Hunt Thread (Buck Down)
« on: September 05, 2011, 05:14:44 PM »
1 for 2 this weekend if you count me.   Although, I was mostly scouting for my muzzy hunt so only packed the bow for about an hour.   We  killed this buck on my first day (Saturday); although my uncle had been hunting since the opener.   In range of about 30 different legal bucks before we dumped this one.    No mature 4's, so we switched to 3's and killed this heavy guy.   Found a really good 28" buck last night - only shooter that I saw.   Glad to have a buck to chase later in the month.

Deer Hunting / Three bucks, one bluff
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:46:16 PM »
I was looking thru old pics and thought I would share a cool story:

We have hunted our same area for generations and to say we have it figured out would be an understatement.  Although there is not much public ground where I grew up, there are a few places that can produce if you know where to look.   We have a bluff that must have bucks in it every day in September, every year on a little piece of BLM.   My dad, brother, and I all killed deer from under this bluff (with bows) from 2001-2006.

Here are the pics of those bucks.  As you can see, the old man is still showing us up!

Just picked the south paw version up today.   I stuck with a trophy taker and the G5 "floating pin" sight.   Shot it a few times and it is extremely smooth an quiet - about what I would expect.

Deer Hunting / Got my '09 Whitey back tonight

Here it is - I am happy    I killed him on the 26th of September so he has really short hair.   I think it looks pretty cool.

General Discussion / Ford F150 w/ Ecoboost 3.5L
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:49:38 PM »
I have been a Toyota man all my life, but have been impressed with the increase in Ford quality over the last couple of years and with a little one on the way - we need more room.

Anyway, my Uncle is a GSM for a large Ford dealership and can get me a pretty good deal.  Looking at a Platinum or Lariat F150 with the new Ecoboost 3.5L.  For you truck guys out there, what do you think?   The biggest thing that I would be towing would be a Polaris RZR or a ski boat.

Guns, Ammo and Reloading / My New 243
« on: February 27, 2011, 05:51:31 PM »
Remington VLS, blueprinted, bedded.   Hart 12 twist, 26".   Tight SAAMI chamber.   55 grain B-tips @ 4100 = pure coyote magic!

Now, I just need a 6.5-20x50 Leupold LR to top her off.   Can't wait.
