Muzzleloader Hunting / CVA Optima Northwest
« on: April 08, 2015, 09:17:47 AM »
Does anyone have this muzzleloader? I just bought one, I should have it by the end of the week. What I really like about it is that the breech plug is removable without the use of any tools. It's a break open action, so you just open it and unscrew the breech plug with your fingers.

I'm hoping this will be a more reliable muzzleloader than the sidelock I've been using. I missed two deer this year due to misfires and hangfires. I'll be hunting deer with it for sure, and elk I'm undecided.

I will probably wait until August to decide if I want to go archery or muzzleloader. Which means I will only be able to apply for the point option this year, but that's okay, Toutle is about the only option and I'm not interested in hunting hoof rot elk.

Trail Cameras / Blacktail bucks- Video
« on: December 02, 2012, 06:53:59 PM »
I've had this camera up for several months, didn't get much for bucks until now. November really changed things! When I checked it today after 4 weeks I had 112 videos. This is the only camera I have out that's not set up with apples for bait. This is just a trail intersection with 3 or 4 trees that have been rubbed by bucks in the past. They didn't really tear the trees up like the past couple of years, but they definitely were coming by regularly and rubbing scent on them. Not sure yet how many different bucks- at least two good ones, and a couple smaller ones as well. I just might try hunting this spot next year.

Trail Cameras / Blacktail buck on doe
« on: November 13, 2011, 10:20:31 PM »
I had a trail camera set up facing a fresh rub I had found, hoping for a picture of the buck that did it. Well, I got very few pictures at this location but I did get this photo of the buck with his girlfriend:

Elk Hunting, / Observatory Early Rifle Any Bull permit
« on: September 15, 2009, 09:37:17 PM »
A friend from Kettle Falls drew the Sept. 21-25 Observatory rifle permit. Yes, the one and only! So, the season begins this coming Monday. I will be heading over there Thursday night, and will meet up with him sometime Friday afternoon. We will get in 3 days of scouting before the hunt and he's hoping to find a 350 or bigger bull.

We're concentrating on the Umtanum GMU just because of the fact that there will have been no other hunters in there chasing elk yet as there is no archery season in there. I realize Manastash has more elk but it gets a lot of pressure so we thought we'd start our scouting in the Umtanum. We will be camping off Bald Mtn Rd.  If we don't find a bull he wants in the first couple of days we will probably move over to the Manastash side. Anyway I am just posting here in case someone has any tips on spots to check out. I am familiar in general with both units and have some spots in mind to check out but it would help to narrow it down a bit.

Upland Birds / Blue Grouse sightings?
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:28:25 PM »
Hey just wondering if any of you guys have got into any blue grouse recently while out scouting? If you have no plans to hunt them I'd appreciate any info on spots where you've seen them. I need to get my dog out and get her a "tune up" before pheasant season starts. I'm going to SE Washington for a week to hunt wild roosters, and haven't done that for about 5 years. And besides that, this Brittany is totally new to me and I haven't had her on wild birds yet. Only have had her out at the Scatter Creek release site right here by my house. I got her from a guy that moved to Alaska a year and a half ago and didn't want to take her with him. I'm thinking she'll do alright on grouse because she does stay with me, unlike my old German Shorthair! Damn dog was always 1/4 mile away.  ::)

Anyway, if you've got a spot with lots of blue grouse PM me. I'd mostly be interested in Kittitas County, Yakima County, and anywhere on the westside that's within about 1 1/2 hours of Rochester.
