Title: Trophy Bull
Post by: Dennis Kirkland on March 18, 2012, 06:27:02 PM
Thought you all might enjoy a good bull since most are now losing their antlers.  Didn't find a trophy bull elk thread, but I know you guys have plenty of them!

There's no way I can remember which bull pics I've already posted on this forum, so you'll have to forgive the duplicates.

This first bull isn't a trophy yet, just a bit of action I caught while chatting with a friend.

huntnphool-
My last two pics are of the same bull.  The last pic is from 2008, the previous one from 2010.  Between Dennis and I, we probably have thousands of pics of that bull over the years.   We're going to miss him.

Here's a couple Canadian bulls putting their antlers to good use.

This is a big boy, Wes...Jasper?

Yep!  I can't wait to get back up there, hopefully within the next couple months.  I'm going to concentrate on bears this time, I don't have any wild grizz pics.

I have actually seen more black bears around Whistler and Pemberton than all of the Canadian Rocky hot spots...but best of fortunes to you as you take on this spring trip, I'm sure you will do well and I look forward to seeing your results.  I am planning to go up in Sept and wind my way down the Rockies through the Tetons before coming home...but we'll see what Obama has to say about gas prices!!!

This was the herd bull at the Pallisades near Jasper about 8 years ago, He made the RMEF Calendar (but not my image of him). :bash:

Thanks Dennis, I'm sure I'll have a good time.  Right now I'm not sure exactly when to go.  It looks like I'll be unemployed by April 13th, but I don't want to go too early.  But again, I don't want to wait too long and have another job interfere.  Working for a living really messes with my photography. :bash:

I don't know about the rest of you but I go a little crazy shooting pics of big animals like deer or elk.  That way I have tons of pics to go back to and edit when I get bored.  Here's a couple I found from September 2010.

Great shots of this bruiser, Wes.  He was one of the more likely to chase you than most of the bulls down there.  I watched Howard move faster than I ever thought he could because of this bull...too bad hunting has become such a big money deal in California!

Glad I could be of help, Dennis.  We didn't see any eye poppers this week, but did see several bulls that might be the hope for the future.

It was great to see branched sword times on several of the young bulls.

Maybe they'll grow up to be another monster like this.

I bet that bull would gross high to 420. That thing is a monster with some killer tops.
Title: Re: Trophy Bull
Post by: Bucklucky on August 16, 2012, 02:24:41 PM
So I just wrote out what I think the measurements would go on that bull and came out with 426 gross. Cool thing is on roosies there are no deducts from the g-4 up. Or maybee its after the g4.

mb: 50,50
g1    16  16
g2    15   15
g3   15  13
g4  18  20
g5  19   20
g6  0    5

MaSS 56

Inside spread 36 (excesive flair do it has to be taken at the swords on the main beam or real close to it)

Extras Right :19, 3  Left : 16, 5

426 gross
Title: Re: Trophy Bull
Post by: Dennis Kirkland on August 16, 2012, 02:58:14 PM
No doubt he was a real monster...unheard of size for this day.  Here is another shot angle after the break (some of us referred to him as "old broken top") and he had a very distinctively deep, gravely bugle.
Title: Re: Trophy Bull
Post by: Ricochet on August 16, 2012, 04:39:12 PM
When bulls that big do battle something is bound to break.  What a disappointment it was when I discovered him broken after putting the sneak on him in the fog.  Almost walked away from him without taking a picture, almost, but he was still huge.

Agreed...he is a monster for body size (and very unique antler formation) ...although looking rather beaten down in this shot...a few days of mud bathes and lots of eating/drinking to regain some weight while the youngsters are running wild, losing body mass and sleep, he may yet have a chance to pass on some more genes!!!

he will be a stud. He might be one now as he had about 25 cows.

To bad it wasn't snowing harder. On the AlCam in Yukon is a small town called Teslin. When you cross the bridge into town immediately on the right is a cafe. I stopped in there last trip, 2003, and they have a nice selection of photographs including the absolutely best animal shot I've ever seen. It's a very large bull moose running away in the brush in a heavy snow. Have to see it to believe it. Looks like the photographer was standing on a sled right behind it and up over the back a bit.

He gave me the evil eye a few times but never made a serious move toward me.  None of the bulls down in that area ever pushed me but that 5X5 herd bull at Davison Road seemed to enjoy chasing people.

The good news is this guy produced three more sets of trophy antlers after this pic was taken, and fathered a bunch of calves.  I expect we might have a down year or two but eventually some of his progeny will get old enough to show their potential.

I've been told that bull was hit by a truck and killed but I'm not sure exactly when it happened.  I would love to get my hands on those horns for a quick measurement if he was still packing them when he met his maker.   They might be sitting in some Parks Service or California Fish and Wildlife warehouse.  I've also heard that salvageable road kill and elk that are poached or killed in rutting battles are given to the local tribe (Yurok) so they may have received the antlers.  The bull that is the World Record left behind a couple sets of sheds as good or better than the set he died wearing.  Somewhere there's some monster antlers laying around.

What # is that bull ear tag?
Is this the same bull form 2012?

Wrong color tags but that could change, I guess.  Your first bull has similar antler formation but I doubt he would have grown that much in a year.  Second bull is totally wrong antler formation in my opinion.

Different bull then the one in your photos Terry though.

And Oddly enough the Bull we just saw the 7x6 did not hava an ear tag on 2012.
We saw 4 bulls with tags this year.

Thank you, Don.  I have nothing hanging on my walls, haven't taken a perfect photo yet.

Brute-
This might be the bull in your photos.  He was sporting an ear tag with 4496 on it.  Luckily for us photographers, it was a smaller tag.  One of the bulls had a big white tag with 793 on it that is hard to hide.

(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b60/renegade54/wildlife/_CDS9807_zps9857017e.jpg) (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/renegade54/media/wildlife/_CDS9807_zps9857017e.jpg.html)

The big velvet bull down on the ocean had a yellow tag with "Do not consume, Call xxx-xxx-xxxx, on the back and an expiration date on the front.  I assume its a warning for residual effects of the tranquilizer shot given when he was tagged, or possibly some other drug given for a disease.  If I could read the tag I'd call the number and ask what its about.  It would be nice to know if the tags have anything to do with denoting an overly aggressive bull.
Title: Re: Trophy Bull
Post by: 6x6 Bull Elk on August 08, 2013, 12:49:21 PM
On the big 6x7, the front said Do not consume before 11-8-2012 and the number on the back is 707-465-7436. The last 3 digits on the phone number are a little iffy but that is what it looks like.

This bull doesn't like you or me-so don't go to California and try for photos. He's
bigger heavier and most likely meaner this year and he will be the herd King..
Title: Re: Trophy Bull
Post by: Don Fischer on August 11, 2013, 10:17:36 AM
For some reason this reminds me of an incident when I was young and a whole lot smarter than I am now. A few of us were out joyriding in the back of a friends pickup. We were in the mountains on a dirt road and there was a really nice buck. We moved out a bit faster to see it and it took off up the side of the road. another friend there in the back told the driver to hurry up and get next to it. The rest is history. The moron jumped out of the back of the pickup and tried to bulldog that buck. Took several months to finish healing!
Title: Re: Trophy Bull
Post by: Dennis Kirkland on August 11, 2013, 04:41:23 PM
Almost unreal, Terry, how much larger this bull has grown!  There are some big boys down there!
Don...sounds like a story out of a book I once read where a character shot a buck and tied it to his back or his bicycle and started riding down the mountain road thinking the buck was dead...it wasn't,,,but it was intended as a funny story and not a tragedy as you are relating!  What was he drinking???

I remember that story Dennis, by Patrick McManus, I believe.
Its amazing how many stories of hazardous activity and personal injury start with the phrase, "One time, when I was drinking....."

Glad to hear you're back in business, Dennis.  Good for another million!

This is my pick as the next great trophy down south.  He's still young and already showing some impressive tine length and the double sword tines speak to his heritage.  If he dodges vehicles long enough, he's a potential World Record. IMHO

Most of Terry and my recent additions to this thread contain pics of one of two big bulls.  I'm not much good at scoring on the hoof, so I was wondering if some of you would give us your opinion of their respective scores and which one would be your trophy of choice.  Remember they are Roosevelt elk, it affects the scoring and also means they are huge bodied elk, making their antlers seem smaller by comparison.  Remember also, nets are for fish!

Thanks, Terry.
I think all of us that made the trip got some exceptional pics this year.  It sure helps having several great bulls to choose from, the year Shawn and Tom came down there was only one great bull, (World Record!) and not much else.  I'm already looking forward to next year, hopefully we can get some of those Washington guys to join us.

Dennis--you are right-that bull never made the all handsome team-he came back one more year after.
Parry has shots of him as a big heavy regressed 5 point. They guessed him at 13 to 15 years old.

One morning I circled and tried to approach from the Timber down by the Pine Bungalows, he
came in the Timber after me.!!!!!!

Elk and apples/pears.  Fruit trees are big attractants to big game animals, especially when these animals grow up near civilization.  Fruit growers get very excited when an elk herd happens to get into orchards as they will cause tremendous damage.  This 6x8 bull was found near a casino in California!

He was definitely a big roosevelt. If he was a lot closer I could of gotten a few better pics. But do to the fact that he was across a very steep and brushy ravine I wasnt taking my chances. You can see from the photo how brushy it is. I bet if you were there Dennis you could of got better pics. Im still learning with my camera.
