2013 Kryptek
« on: July 08, 2013, 05:16:43 PM »
I'm getting a really cool opportunity to test out some of the new 2013 gear from Kryptek.

I'll be testing at least one pair of their new pants and a few of the tops.

Not sure yet when it is going to arrive but when it does, I'll post some pics and write an on going review as I use the stuff this year.

Well I went on a scouting trip a week ago and got a chance to test some of the new tops from Kryptek.

First, the Merino is a really nice base/mid layer. It is a fairly heavy weight merino and really warm. The perforations under the arm and down the sides helps a lot with sweat. As I was hiking up to the first pass on our hike (about 6800 ft) the wind was really cold with just a t-shirt on. I threw on the Merino top and I was warm in a few seconds. The quarter-zip make it easy to put on and take off. I think this one is a must have.

The Cerdic hoodie was nice and warm also. The "scuba" hood works really well for blocking the wind when I'm glassing. I like how I can turn my head to either side and the hood moves with me instead of getting in my face. The only complaint I have about it is that it is starting to pile up in a few spots which doesn't hurt anything, but it looks bad.

The Kratos puffy jacket is awesome. Very warm and it packs up small for a synthetic jacket. I wore the Kratos and my Merino over a soaking wet t-shirt and it dried in no time. The stretch panels down the sides make it really comfortable and also help to keep me dry.
The puffy jacket also makes a great pillow! This jacket will be in my pack on all my trips this year.

I just got the Alaios pants in the mail today so I haven't had a chance to really test them out yet. I will test them a bit tomorrow when I do a short training hike with my pack on and see how they work in warm temps.

I know a guy who helped design some of the 2013 line.

littlebuf and I did 18 miles on Sunday morning to check out a new bear spot. We met at 3:30 am and started hiking at 4:00 am.

The first three miles were flat and took us 45 minutes since it was dark and we were walking fast. At the three mile mark, we started climbing to get into what we hoped to be a really good bear spotting vantage point. We climbed steadily for another two hours and finally stopped to grab a quick snack for breakfast at just under nine miles. After a quick break we walked the rest of the way to where we sat and glassed for a while.
While we didn't see any bears, we did see a bunch of elk including four bulls in a high meadow.

On the hike I wore the Alaios pants and the Merino top. I was sweating pretty good during the climb and was pretty much soaked by the time we reached the spot where we sat and ate breakfast. We were pretty high at that point and it was cold so I threw on the Kratos puffy jacket over my sweaty Merino to stay warm. After wearing the puffy for about an hour I was nice and dry. I was very happy with how fast the gear dried as I sat and glassed.

During the hike out it was pretty warm but the clothes performed very well.
