1st Blacktail Buck
« on: November 03, 2014, 03:25:21 PM »
Nothing much to this story on this buck. I had one day to hunt this general season and that was Thursday. I had a spot in my mind the whole time I was elk hunting that I wanted to come back and try. After eating an Idaho bull tag and only shooting a spike on my Washington bull tag, but I was still happy not to eat that tag too ( I have ate a few over the past couple years).
So I got off work drove out to my spot, headed out in the rain and jumped this guy. He was beaded on a bench behind an old growth cedar stump. I was making my way up out of a creek draw on to the bench. The stump was on the edge of it, and then it turned into a long timbered flat. I must have really scared him because he blew out of his bed and never really stopped to look. I could see he was a nice buck. Immediately I felt the disappointment of blowing this hunt. I tried to get a shot, but never had a good lane and I wonít just sling lead.  I thought to myself, just stay calm and walk slow. Something told me on how this went down that this guy would stop and look back.
I kept on the game trail I was on for about another 200-300 yards, nice and slow, then I caught something moving ahead of me about a hundred yards. It was a deer and moving towards me. He saw me just as I saw him and that he was that buck. He stopped and stuck his neck out from behind a big fir tree and thatís all I needed. I fired one shot and in all the smoke, rain and excitement I thought I honestly missed because my scope was so wet and foggy. Pretty low light in that old timber the last hour of shooting daylight, especially in the rain storm we were having. I walked up to the spot where he should have been and there he was. He never took a step. The bullet entered in the neck and hit the spin just where the back straps come up and hit the neck meet. PERFECT!
I was jacked to finally shoot my first Blacktial. His neck was swollen, but he did not stink at all. No does around him so I think he was just starting to feel the itch to get moving on the rut.
