Ford F150 w/ Ecoboost 3.5L
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:49:38 PM »
I have been a Toyota man all my life, but have been impressed with the increase in Ford quality over the last couple of years and with a little one on the way - we need more room.

Anyway, my Uncle is a GSM for a large Ford dealership and can get me a pretty good deal.  Looking at a Platinum or Lariat F150 with the new Ecoboost 3.5L.  For you truck guys out there, what do you think?   The biggest thing that I would be towing would be a Polaris RZR or a ski boat.

Thoughts?

sounds fancy, unfortunately i know nothing about it. i do know you cant go wrong with a ford and your right about there quality in the recent years. only one who didn't take a bail out and still led in sales.

Yeah, the bail out thing is big in my book - a major reason for considering Ford.

I don't know anything about them but that engine seems eerily small. I can ask the guys at our sister store tomorrow what they think of that engine.

That is the ford motor that has the factory turbo on it correct?  If it is I have heard very good things about it but I don't think it has been out very long so that would worry me. I like to see new ideas perform for a couple years before I take the plunge.   The new fords sure do look good though.  I just can't get away from the Toyota mainly because of the resale and reliability.

Yeah, it's the twin turbo V-6.  My Uncle was down in L.A. this winter giving them test run.   He said that they had unbelievable power and fuel economy was showing around 26 mpg?  The one he was driving did not do that well, but he was rallying it around.

I think they have 365 hp and peak torque at around 1700 rpms.   Not saying I am a true believer, but the concept is interesting.

Yeah I am not sure where I was reading about it but I think it said that they got 22mpg which is awesome for a truck. I think the person that wrote the article had a tundra 5.7 and said the ford felt like it had comparable power.

I have been looking at new f-150's for some time, but haven't pulled the trigger. I was leaning on picking up a used 2009 or 2010 with the 5.4, but garnering the new transmission, which is where the highway mileage is picked up.  In town mileage would still suck.  But the motor has been tested and performs well with few problems and good longevity.

My concern with the twin turbo would be longevity.  I think it would be a great motor for the Mustang's and suv's, etc.. But I think a 4 wheel drive 1/2 ton pickup would require high utilization of the turbo thus decreasing the longevity of the motor.

But the statistics on that motor are phenomenal out of a domestic v-6

you might check out some ford forums to see if anyone is experiencing problems with them yet.  Keep in mind that they also put this motor in the lincoln's if you are looking for other resources.

Yeah, it's the twin turbo V-6.

Well...shows you what I know. Definitely sounds like a cool rig.
