Like others have said, tell him to wait and save up some more...

I had a chance to use the Vortex VIPER HD 80mm scope two weekends ago... and holy crap that thing is nice!  Better light gathering at all power levels except 60X than my $350 pair of Minox 10x42 binos.  Extremely clear and very easy to use.

Only one complaint... and its a big one.  They eye ocular piece threads onto the main scope body.  They are very fine threads and are very shallow, and are only threaded for about 1/4" or less.  The ocular piece kept getting loose so we went to tighten it up and with relatively little pressure they bottomed out and stripped out.  It was still very usable, just a bit disappointing.

You would think that for having a $1K scope it would have a better design than that.  But the one thing great about Vortex is that they have the best customer service in the industry, bar none.

I don't know guys.  I have the Vortex Nomad straight with 20-60x eyepiece and it works pretty good.  I feel my Vortex Vipers binos are 90% of a Swaro binocular.  However, the Vortex Nomad spotter is not 90% of a Swaro.  However, it works for what it is, has a great warranty, and gives decent image quality.

I think the Vortex Razor HD optics whether it be binos, spotters, or scopes are 99% swaros or on par... they are tanks and glass is awesome.

Their Viper HD spotters and binos are only a VERY slight step below the Razor line...  I'd find a hard time justifying the huge price difference for so little quality difference.  But thats just me...

I am yet to be blown away by a spotter.  I've got a swarovski 80 hd, but it does not make me ooohhh and awe.  Throw up a pair of swarovisions and one word hits your lips "amazing."  Not sure if there really is an alpha spotter that is "worth" the money?

This is not on the subject matter of what you asked but noone is really sticking to the topic so. This past hunting season I was fortunate enough to look thru a zen ray and I was really impressed.

I dont think its worth buying a spotter unless you go big. All the ones I've looked through that are 4-500$ range just wouldn't cut it after a few hours of glassing. I definitely think its worth it to wait and save up, cheap glass is really hard on my eyes personally.

Doesn't matter what quality of a spotter you have, because after X amount of time you will have eye strain!  You get what you pay for!  My spotter (Zeiss Diascope 85) is always with me.  I use it for a base for my 10X EL's and confirm items or size of animals with the spotter.  I don't want to use boot leather or time to rule out a undesirable buck/shed or whatever!  I would guess I'm 95% bino and 5% spotter while glassing from a seated position.  This is what works best for me now with my style of hunting.

So, to answer your question...I don't have one.  Sorry.  The Vortex seems to be getting good reviews though?
As long as there's lead in the air, there's still hope!

Used the Vortex Viper HD 80mm this weekend while hunting the breaks of the salmon river in ID.  Got to say its one of the few spotters I've looked through that I can actively glass through (even on a pretty crappy tripod) and not get eye strain.  First glass with the binos to see anything that stuck out or was easy to see, then setup the spotter and glassed on 20X to really hit the shadows hard.  Loved it...
