New and Improved Kimber Montana ready for maiden voyage
« on: September 16, 2011, 09:54:17 PM »
Still got a little cosmetic work to do, but it is shootable.  It was a 270 wsm, but is now chambered in 7mm/300wsm (26" Krieger barrel) with a custom reamer that allows 168 bergers to be jammed and still fit the mag.   Got the Norma brass prepped and loaded - ready for a little accuracy testing tomorrow.   Got a good deal on a couple 6.5-20 Leupys so I went with that.  Put the other on my Hart-barreled .243.  Will have to play with that one after hunting season - my new yote getter.

Russ haydon put the barrel on.  Its actually perfectly balanced and appears to be very accurate in initial range testing.  A good balance of weight and long range capability.

Looks great JJ!
What do u mean its clambered in 7mm/300wsm? U mean 7wsm? Didn't think u could load a 7mm into a 270wsm action (is it the same short throw of a 700 SA?)...?  So I'm assuming 7wsm??

No, I mean 7mm - that is the caliber.  Just the neck diameter - nothing to do with the case.  It's a 300 WSM that i necked down to 7mm.  Longer neck and a little less case capacity than the 7 wsm.   Beauty here is the ability to use the superior Norma brass and not have to buy 100 winshitter cases and throw half away.   I would have sold the thing and started from scratch, but the wife bought if for me and I can't get rid of it so I decided to accurize it.   The action and stock are actually pretty slick, so it is a pretty good rifle now.

It's got a real short throat on it and definitely generated a lot more pressure per powder charge than a SAAMI chamber would.   It'll be intersting to see how the chrono reads.  This is my first Krieger barrel and it copper fouls like nothing I have ever seen.  I am hoping that this is from the lead being a little rough from chambering and that it smooths out after 20 or so rounds.  I've had 5 or 6 hart barrels which all cleaned like a breeze after 3 or 4 rounds.   I am hoping this one "breaks in" quickly as well.

Ahhh I follow ya!  Hadn't heard of necking down the 300WSM brass to the 7MM bullet.  How many grains of powder you throwing down the tube with the 168's?

And I know as far as cleaning goes I usually throw down 50-70 rounds on my rock creek barrel before I notice accuracy falling off and it cleans very easily.  Granted this is with the 280 AI with I'm only firing off 62 grains of powder +/-...  My buddies 300 ultra starts dropping off accuracy after 20 or so rounds

The kimber drew first blood this weekend - still undetermined on whether or not it first drew blood on the human face or the muley buck, though?
