JJ's 2012 Hunting Thread (BBD....Finally!)
« on: September 19, 2012, 06:51:15 PM »
It all begins next Friday.   2 short months, 3 deer tags, 2 elk tags, and 31 planned days in the field.   On December 1st, I will look back and wish I was sitting right here again - starting this thread and dreaming about the critters I will see....

My advice is leave your rifle at home and save the pack weight, you won't be pulling the trigger anyway and could use the room for a full size camera/lens.

I leave in 2 days for Southern Idaho.  Doesn't seem right to be hunting big rutting bulls, in the sage brush, with a rifle on October 1st...  Hopefully, I can turn up a good bull!

Now that was a rough way to start the season....

85 degrees and a full moon made the elk sightings few and far between during daylight hours.  Although I was hunting sage brush and scattered quakie patches (really open country), it was steep and mean.   Really only had the first 30 minutes of the day to locate elk before they bedded.  I had to commit to a certain canyon and hike out to a knob before light and hope that there were elk below me.  Never found the big pre-scouted bulls, but I did get on some small 5 and 6 point bulls.

My season is 31 days, so  will be back down for 12 days at the end of the month with a deer tag in my pocket as well.

We did find a really big mule deer back home (in WA).  My dad missed it with his bow on Friday.  He thinks that it is 185" plus as a typical 4 and around 29-30" wide.   I looked for it on Saturday morning with my muzzy, but couldn't turn it up.  I did see 30 or so bucks that morning, though.  That is about 15" bigger than anything I have ever seen back home.  Must be a genetic freak?

Either that or he is using the same tape that produces "New state records"

M-Ray and I sealed the deal on Saturday with a couple 4-points..   Mine is already in the freezer.   Gotta clean up, repack, and head out in 5 days to S. Idaho.
